Euler-Rodrigues and Cayley formulas for rotation of elasticity tensors

چکیده
It is fairly well known that rotation in three dimensions can be expressed as a quadratic in a skew symmetric matrix via the Euler-Rodrigues formula. A generalized Euler-Rodrigues polynomial of degree 2n in a skew symmetric generating matrix is derived for the rotation matrix of tensors of order n. The Euler-Rodrigues formula for rigid body rotation is recovered by n = 1. A Cayley form of the n order rotation tensor is also derived. The representations simplify if there exists some underlying symmetry, as is the case for elasticity tensors such as strain and the fourth order tensor of elastic moduli. A new formula is presented for the transformation of elastic moduli under rotation: as a 21-vector with a rotation matrix given by a polynomial of degree 8. The tensor rotation formulae are related to Cartan decomposition of elastic moduli and projection onto hexagonal symmetry.

Representing Attitude: Euler Angles, Unit Quaternions, and Rotation Vectors
We present the three main mathematical constructs used to represent the attitude of a rigid body in threedimensional space. These are (1) the rotation matrix, (2) a triple of Euler angles, and (3) the unit quaternion. To these we add a fourth, the rotation vector, which has many of the benefits of both Euler angles and quaternions, but neither the singularities of the former, nor the quadratic ...
متن کاملPrincipal Rotation Representations of Proper NxN Orthogonal Matrices
Three and four parameter representations of 3x3 orthogonal matrices are extended to the general case of proper NxN orthogonal matrices. These developments generalize the classical Rodrigues parameter, the Euler parameters, and the recently introduced modified Rodrigues parameters to higher dimensions. The developments presented generalize and extend the classical result known as the Cayley tran...
متن کاملNon-Conventional Thermodynamics and Models of Gradient Elasticity
We consider material bodies exhibiting a response function for free energy, which depends on both the strain and its gradient. Toupin–Mindlin’s gradient elasticity is characterized by Cauchy stress tensors, which are given by space-like Euler–Lagrange derivative of the free energy with respect to the strain. The present paper aims at developing a first version of gradient elasticity of non-Toup...
متن کاملOn the distance eigenvalues of Cayley graphs
In this paper, we determine the distance matrix and its characteristic polynomial of a Cayley graph over a group G in terms of irreducible representations of G. We give exact formulas for n-prisms, hexagonal torus network and cubic Cayley graphs over abelian groups. We construct an innite family of distance integral Cayley graphs. Also we prove that a nite abelian group G admits a connected...
متن کاملAn Historical Note on Finite Rotations
It is shown in this paper that Euler was first to derive the finite rotation formula which is often erroneously attributed to Rodrigues, while Rodrigues was responsible for the derivation of the composition formulae for successive finite rotations and the so-called Euler parameters of finite rotation. Therefore, based upon historical facts, the following nomenclature is suggested: Euler's finit...
